National Volunteer Month: Why Youth Volunteerism Is Changing Communities

작성자 Annabelle Beavan2026년 4월 2일

National Volunteer Month is a time to celebrate the people who show up, lend a hand, and help strengthen our communities. At the LindaBen Foundation in Maryland, one group of volunteers continues to inspire us every day: young people.

Youth volunteers make up less than 10% of our volunteer team, their energy, compassion, and leadership could help transform how we serve families across our communities.

Why Youth Volunteerism Matters

Youth volunteerism is more than service hours — it’s about shaping future leaders while creating real, immediate impact.

When young people engage in community service, they:

  • develop empathy and social responsibility

  • build leadership, teamwork, and communication skills

  • gain real-world experience beyond the classroom

  • become lifelong advocates for equity and wellness

At the same time, communities benefit from fresh ideas, strong work ethic, and a generation invested in positive change.

How Youth Volunteers Support the LindaBen Foundation

Our youth volunteers play a vital role in nearly every part of our work. Their dedication helps us reach more families and deliver support with dignity and care.

Food Distribution & Packing

Youth volunteers help:

  • pack and organize food boxes

  • sort food rescue and stock shelves

  • prepare fresh produce for distribution

  • support community food events and our pantry

Their support ensures families receive nourishing food efficiently and respectfully.

Community Outreach & Events

From assisting at wellness events to helping with community programs, youth volunteers:

  • greet families and provide guidance

  • help set up and break down events

  • support program logistics

They bring warmth, energy, and a welcoming presence to every interaction.

Administrative & Behind-the-Scenes Support

Many youth volunteers also assist with:

  • organizing supplies and inventory

  • data entry and documentation

  • volunteer coordination and outreach

These behind-the-scenes contributions are essential to keeping our programs running smoothly.

Youth Service Builds Stronger Communities

When young people give back, the impact extends far beyond a single volunteer shift.

Youth volunteerism helps:

  • strengthen community connections

  • bridge generational gaps

  • foster pride and ownership in local neighborhoods

  • inspire peers to get involved

At the LindaBen Foundation, we’ve seen how youth volunteers grow in confidence while helping families access food, resources, and support.

A Pathway to Empowerment

We believe service should be empowering — not transactional. Youth volunteers are encouraged to:

  • learn about food insecurity and wellness equity

  • develop leadership skills

  • explore careers in nonprofit, healthcare, education, and community service

  • reflect on the impact of their work

For many, volunteering becomes a gateway to lifelong civic engagement.

National Volunteer Month: Get Involved

This April, we celebrate every young person who has chosen to serve — and we invite more to join us.

Whether you’re a student looking for service hours, a young professional seeking purpose, or an educator supporting student engagement, there’s a place for you at the LindaBen Foundation.
